On the weekend of June 20-22, 2025, we did our yearly Celebrate Lanigan, and this year we had to deal with some inclement weather in the form of some much-needed rain combined with the cooler weather meant we had to reorganize and cancel some events. It is always tough to make decisions to cancel events that have been planned for months.
I know there was some disappointment, however we did what we thought was best to get as many events done as possible. The town staff and event organizations really pulled together to reorganize and move what events we could inside.
I want to say a big thank you to all our staff for the great effort in making this weekend a success despite the weather. Big thank you to Sherry and Brandon for organizing their teams and working with all the groups to make the best of the situation.
We kicked things off on Friday night with the council BBQ and had a pretty good turnout and we were able to raise through your generous donations of over $700 dollars for the foodbank. We then held our first ever outdoor movie night which the rain held off for and had a very well-done fireworks display.
Saturday saw the rain come but we had some real troopers playing ball all day as well as the sheep dog trials. Everyone braved the rain and cooler temperatures and still had some fun. The kids’ carnival was moved into the arena and was a huge success. From what I saw the kids had a lot of fun.
I want to say a big thank you to all the groups and volunteers that helped organize and put events together for the weekend without you we could not do this. Also thank you to all our sponsors that help cover the costs of the different events. Without your generous support we would not be able to put on such a variety of events.
When you must deal with weather like we did it makes you look for different ideas on what we can do to still put on the weekend. We will learn from this weekend and be better prepared in the future. We have already had some discussions for next year and I had a few people give me some good ideas that we can look at to continue to grow this event for our community.
Kind regards,
- Mayor Tony Mycock
