The Council of the Town of Lanigan held a regular meeting on September 23, 2024, and following are highlights of the meeting:
- Cpl. Kris Rau attended the Council meeting to introduce himself and review statistics from the past 12 months. Like every other industry in recent years, policing generally has been equally challenged with attracting new human resources. Council is looking forward to regular engagement with Cpl. Rau and emphasize a hearty welcome to the Town of Lanigan!
- Council approved the new school road access project by awarding the contract to TSL Mechanical (2019). The project includes development of a road for the student parking lot and road for the school bus loop, both roads leading to Commercial Drive. This is an approximate $360,000 project including taxes and is part of the commitment made by the Town of Lanigan to support the construction of the new K-12 school.
- Council approved the next step of property tax enforcement for any properties in tax arrears for the 2023 taxation year and prior. We encourage any property owners with tax arrears to bring their property tax account up to date to avoid further costs.
- Council approved property tax abatements for the Merry Mixers and Lanigan Dance Dynamics, which will assist each of these groups with maintaining programs at a reasonable cost to their users.
- Council approved support to participate in the establishment of a sustainable co-operative housing initiative within the MSMA region to assist in addressing the current housing crisis.
- Bylaw 11/2024, being a bylaw to establish a mail-in ballot voting system for the municipal election was approved by Council. More information about this opportunity to vote in the upcoming municipal election will be provided in the very near future.
- Council approved changes to the Town of Lanigan organizational chart to include an Operations Supervisor that will report to the Director of Operations, and change the Corporate Services Manager to Director of Corporate Services.
- The Recreation Manager position is currently vacant, and we do not intend to fill this position in the foreseeable future. All matters related to the upcoming arena operations and community hall will be handled by the office administration staff for booking and scheduling. All facility operational matters will be handled by the operations staff with Pat Sereda engaged for ice maintenance this season.
