Lanigan Lowdown: Mayor's Snapshot (July 21, 2025)

With the new waterpark facility, a new K-12 school now open, the new daycare facility now under construction, we have some exciting things happening in Lanigan. The new Shell/DQ development is now under construction, and we have had a significant increase in residential and commercial development inquiries in 2025.

Prior to 2024, we had zero or nearly zero new residential or commercial development for at least 5 years. In 2024, we had six new dwelling units develop in Lanigan, and we are well on our way to seeing 10-12 new dwelling units in 2025, not including potential multi family residential developments.

We focused on residential development readiness in 2024, which continues in 2025 with concept planning for opportunities. The future of Lanigan is bright and we intend to continue in the direction we are headed.

The recent BHP news about the Jansen mine being operational mid 2027 rather than 2026 and the BHP Stage 2 being deferred by 2 years to 2031 does not negatively impact Lanigan. In fact, it helps us with some additional breathing space for development readiness. Our growth strategies consider a much bigger picture than any one development in the region. Besides BHP’s new mine, Nutrien Lanigan Potash has been around for over 60 years, and the Aspen Power Station is under construction. We have a strong local business and regional agricultural community and economy with significant local and regional agricultural industry.

As a council, we will continue to stay the course with our strategic plan that we put in place after the election. Investment confidence and interest in Lanigan is happening and is growing. We will continue to focus our efforts on investment retention and attraction, building on development readiness as we welcome new commercial and residential development in Lanigan. We are looking forward to a prosperous future!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates as they happen!
